Call of Cthulhu is an insane game. Quite literally, actually. 99.9% of the time your characters just go insane. In fact, there are only 3 ways to win* at Call of Cthulhu:

1.) The Blind Cripple
Your character needs to have an incredibly low dex and probably all other stats as well. His skill points may be placed anywhere but Spot Hidden, Dodge, and any other skill requiring maneuverability or sight. Essentially, this character never leaves home, and therefore should be just peachy when the investigative team runs off to certain death. Additionally, he is blind, so he can't see anything and therefore should make potentially 0 sanity checks.

2.) The Illiterate Sprinter
This character has an 18 dex, a decent Pow, and an incredibly low Int. All his points should go into dodge and similar skills - he cannot read, and therefore cannot be expected to go insane from reading the horrible, horrible tomes he is likely to encounter. Should danger threaten, he may not be able to outrun the hungry, hungry monster - but he certainly can outrun the rest of the tasty party.

3.) The Weak Willed Moron
This character has a Pow of 3, and makes sure the entire party knows it. He also carries a lot of guns. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES will the party allow this character to so much as GLIMPSE danger, much less experience even a moderate sanity loss - instead, they'll put you up in a nice hotel, room service and all, and not expect another thing out of you.

* - Since you could never actually kill Cthulhu, "win" here means "stay alive until he eats the world".
